The Bharatiya Janata Party won 38 of the 44 seats in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections, retaining control of the state capital’s civic body after results were declared by the State Election Commission on Tuesday.
The Congress finished second with five seats, while an independent candidate won one seat. The Aam Aadmi Party, which had secured one seat in the previous election, failed to win any this time.
The result gives the BJP a clear majority in the municipal corporation, which is responsible for core urban administration in Gandhinagar. The outcome will determine the political composition of the civic body as it manages municipal services and local infrastructure across the city.
Elections to the GMC were held across 11 wards, with 130 candidates contesting the 44 seats. Gandhinagar has around 2.59 lakh registered voters, according to figures released by the State Election Commission. Voter turnout stood at 59.25%.
The BJP’s tally is lower than its performance in the previous GMC election held in October 2021, when it won 41 of the 44 seats. The Congress had won two seats in that election, while the AAP had secured one.
The shift in seat numbers still leaves the BJP with a dominant position in the corporation. The Congress increased its representation from two seats to five, while the AAP lost its sole seat. An independent candidate also entered the corporation after the latest counting process.
Counting of votes for the three civic bodies began at 9 am on Tuesday. The GMC result was announced as part of that counting exercise, with the State Election Commission releasing the turnout and seat details.
The election outcome establishes the composition of Gandhinagar’s municipal corporation for the new civic term. The elected body will now be responsible for carrying forward municipal administration in the city under the corporation’s existing structure of 11 wards and 44 seats.
