Former Chennai police commissioner A Arun was questioned for about three hours by investigators examining how the sexual assault case involving Gem Granites owner R Veeramani was handled, according to a report by the Times of India. Arun, an ADGP-rank officer currently under compulsory wait, was summoned to a secluded location in the city and his responses were recorded in writing.
Sources cited in the report said the investigating team put around 80 questions to Arun during the questioning on Saturday. The inquiry is examining the handling of a case registered in October 2025 after a volunteer submitted a pen drive containing a video purportedly showing the sexual assault of a minor girl to the Anti-Vice Squad of Chennai police.
The police initially filed a closure report dated February 19, 2026, placing the case under the “further action dropped” category. The report cited the investigators’ inability to establish the identity and age of the girl shown in the video, among other reasons.
A special Pocso court rejected the attempt to close the case and ordered further investigation. The court’s intervention brought renewed scrutiny to the way the original complaint and the material submitted to the police had been assessed.
Following the court order, the state government formed an all-women special investigation team to investigate the child rape cases and other “related matters”. The questioning of Arun forms part of that wider inquiry into the handling of the case and the decisions taken during the earlier investigation.
The report did not disclose the contents of Arun’s written responses or indicate whether investigators had reached any conclusion about his role in the handling of the case. It also did not provide details of further questioning or other investigative steps involving him.
The case highlights the formal chain of review that can follow when a court rejects a police closure report. In this instance, the special Pocso court’s order led to further investigation and the creation of a dedicated special investigation team, while the questioning of a former city police chief has brought the conduct of the earlier inquiry into focus.
The investigation will now proceed through the special team constituted by the state. Further action will depend on the evidence collected, the responses recorded from officials and other findings in the probe.
