A group of five men posing as income tax officers allegedly entered an Ajmer businessman’s home in Nasirabad on Friday, took jewellery worth lakhs of rupees and three mobile phones, and escaped in a black SUV, according to Nasirabad Sadar police.
The incident took place at around 11.30am at businessman Anil Maheshwari’s residence in Mahesh Colony, near the Dilwara bypass. Maheshwari was at his office in Nasirabad city with his brother and father when the men arrived at the house, police said.
According to Nasirabad station house officer Radheshyam Choudhary, the men showed identity cards and claimed to be income tax officers. They allegedly took the mobile phones belonging to family members and began searching the property. The use of official identity and a coordinated search allowed the group to enter the house and remove valuables before the family could establish whether the raid was genuine.
Police said CCTV footage showed the men wearing white clothes and gloves, with their faces lowered. The group remained inside the house for approximately 14 minutes. During that time, they collected jewellery and the three phones before allegedly telling the family that the items were being seized.
The alleged impersonation was challenged when Maheshwari’s son, Kartik, asked the men to provide a receipt for the valuables. The men allegedly pushed him and ran towards their vehicle. Kartik chased them but was unable to stop the group, which then fled in the black SUV.
The case highlights the immediate security risk created when criminals use the appearance and procedures of government enforcement agencies to gain access to private premises. An income tax search is ordinarily associated with official identification, documented authority and seizure records; in this case, the family said the men left without providing a receipt, according to the police account reported by the Times News Network.
Nasirabad police are examining CCTV footage to identify the accused and trace the vehicle used in the crime. The family has provided police with a list of the missing jewellery, and an FIR has been registered. The investigation is continuing.
