Ernakulam South Railway Station Seizes 7 Kg Cannabis, Two Held

Railway police inspection at Ernakulam South railway station after a cannabis seizure

Railway police arrested people from West Bengal after seizing seven kilograms of cannabis worth an estimated Rs 3.5 lakh at Ernakulam South railway station in Kochi during an inspection targeting drug trafficking on trains, officials said.

The seizure was made on Saturday morning while railway police were conducting checks between Thrissur and Ernakulam railway stations. The cannabis was found during an inspection of a bag at Ernakulam South station, according to the report by Malayala Manorama.

The arrested individuals allegedly told authorities that they had been instructed to bring the bag to Ernakulam and hand it over to another person. They were reportedly promised a commission of Rs 20,000 after completing the handover.

The police action formed part of checks intended to prevent the transportation of narcotics through trains. The operation covered the railway corridor between Thrissur and Ernakulam, with the seizure taking place at the South railway station.

Officials said the seized cannabis was valued at approximately Rs 3.5 lakh. The report identified the arrested individuals as natives of West Bengal but did not provide further details about their identities, the person who allegedly instructed them or the intended recipient of the bag.

The seizure places Ernakulam South, one of Kochi’s key railway stations, at the centre of an ongoing enforcement operation against narcotics movement through the rail network. The available report does not state whether the police had identified or detained the person who allegedly arranged the delivery.

The arrests followed the railway police inspection conducted on Saturday morning. Further action, including investigation into the alleged handover arrangement and the wider supply chain, will depend on the findings of the authorities.
