East Delhi Shootings: Two Men Killed Within 24 Hours

Police investigation after East Delhi shootings in a residential neighbourhood

Two men were killed in separate shooting incidents in northeast Delhi within 24 hours, with motorcycle-borne attackers fleeing both scenes, according to a report by Jagran citing police and family accounts. The incidents took place in Sonia Vihar and Gautampuri, raising fresh concerns about armed attacks in residential and commercial areas of the district.

The first shooting occurred on Tuesday night in the Sonia Vihar police station area. Police said unidentified attackers travelling on a motorcycle fired three rounds at Manish Yadav, who lived with his family at Saade Teen Pushta. The bullets struck his head and other parts of his body, leaving him critically injured.

Yadav’s family took him to a trauma centre in a private vehicle, where doctors declared him dead. He worked at a CNG station in Rohini. His family told the newspaper that he had no known enmity with anyone. Yadav is survived by his father, Jai Bhagwan, his wife and two children.

Less than 24 hours later, a second shooting was reported in the Gautampuri area. The victim was identified as Waseem, who operated an electrical equipment shop in the area and lived with his family in Seelampur. According to his family, he was sitting inside the shop at around 8.30 pm on Wednesday when two men arrived on a motorcycle and shot him before escaping.

The Seelampur police station registered a murder case in connection with Waseem’s death. The report said the two incidents were carried out by different assailants, although police are examining whether personal enmity may have been involved in either case. The account did not establish a confirmed motive in either shooting.

Rahul Alwal, deputy commissioner of police for northeast Delhi, said officers were examining CCTV footage to identify the attackers. The footage is expected to form part of the investigation into the movements of the motorcycle-borne suspects and the circumstances surrounding both attacks.

The incidents have placed attention on the ability of local policing arrangements to prevent armed violence in densely populated neighbourhoods. In both cases, the attackers allegedly used motorcycles to approach the victims and leave the scene, while the victims were in or near ordinary residential and commercial settings.

The police investigation remains focused on identifying the suspects and determining the motive behind the killings. Cases have been registered at the Sonia Vihar and Seelampur police stations, and CCTV footage is being reviewed as the next stated investigative step.
