Five people were killed in two separate road accidents in East Burdwan between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, according to police and local sources cited in the report. The crashes took place in Bhatar and Rayna, with two motorcyclists allegedly hit by an unidentified vehicle in one incident and three members of a family killed after a lorry struck their motorcycle in the other.
The first accident took place late on Tuesday night near the cremation ground at Patna village in Bhatar. Police said Jit Majhi, 19, and Manoj Pal, 30, were returning home on a motorcycle after visiting puja pandals in Bardhaman when a vehicle allegedly hit them and fled the scene.
Both men lived in the Mahachanda area of Bhatar. The report said local police reached the spot after receiving information about the crash and recovered the bodies. The bodies were sent to Bardhaman Medical College for post-mortem examination. Police are investigating the incident and the vehicle involved had not been identified in the supplied report.
A few hours later, another fatal crash was reported in Rayna. The victims were residents of Bajitpur village under the Sehara gram panchayat. According to local sources, the three men had travelled by motorcycle to refuel at a petrol pump in the Mirepota Jahuri Pukur area at around 10am on Wednesday.
As they turned their motorcycle towards the petrol pump, a lorry travelling towards Bardhaman allegedly hit them. The impact threw all three riders onto the road. Police from the Seharabazar outpost under Rayna police station reached the location and shifted the injured men to Bardhaman Medical College Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital declared all three dead. The victims were identified as Kamakhya Ray, 61, Narugopal Ray, 45, and Srikanta Ray, 41. The three men were members of the same family, according to the report.
The two incidents involved different locations and circumstances but both occurred on roads used by local residents for routine travel. The first crash involved two people returning home late at night, while the second occurred as three residents turned towards a petrol pump during the morning. The report did not specify whether the victims were wearing helmets or provide details about road conditions, traffic regulation, vehicle speeds or arrests.
Police investigations were continuing in both cases. The bodies from the Bhatar crash were sent for post-mortem examination, while the Rayna victims were declared dead after being taken to Bardhaman Medical College Hospital. No further details about the identification of the vehicles or legal action were available in the supplied report.
