The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced the trial run of the newly constructed tunnel and underpasses on the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway.
This initiative is poised to alleviate long-standing traffic congestion along the Delhi-Gurugram corridor, particularly on National Highway 48 (NH-48), which witnesses a daily traffic volume exceeding 300,000 vehicles . The trial operations, initiated on May 29, 2025, are scheduled from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM daily. This period is strategically chosen to coincide with peak afternoon traffic hours, allowing authorities to assess real-time traffic flow and gather valuable feedback from commuters. The trial encompasses a 3.6 km-long, eight-lane tunnel connecting the Dwarka Expressway to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, along with a 1.5 km-long, two-lane tunnel linking the expressway to NH-48 towards Gurugram .
Upon successful completion of the trial phase, the tunnel is expected to be fully operational by June 5, 2025. This development is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Gurugram, providing a more efficient route for daily commuters and enhancing access to key destinations, including IGI Airport and the proposed Global City in Gurugram . The Dwarka Expressway project is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and promoting sustainable urban development. By providing a dedicated, grade-separated corridor, the expressway aims to ease traffic congestion, reduce vehicular emissions, and facilitate smoother connectivity between Delhi and its satellite cities.
As the trial run progresses, commuters are encouraged to provide feedback to NHAI to ensure that the final implementation meets the needs of the public and contributes to the overarching goal of creating a zero-net-carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban environment.
