A Durgapur bike collision killed a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man after two motorcycles crashed head-on on a road near Kumarmangalam Park late on Sunday night. Two other people were seriously injured in the accident, according to a report by Sangbad Pratidin – Bengal citing police information.
The deceased were identified as Anirban Chakraborty, 16, a resident of Durgapur’s 54 Feet area, and Sahil Sharma, 22, who lived in Benachity. The four people had reportedly gone out to visit Durga Puja pandals when the collision took place.
Police said the crash occurred while the two motorcycles were travelling along the road from the Kumarmangalam Park side towards the I Sector crossing. Local residents helped rescue the injured people and arranged for them to be taken to hospital.
All four were initially taken to the hospital of the Durgapur Steel Plant. Anirban Chakraborty died while undergoing treatment there. The remaining three injured people were later shifted to a private hospital in Durgapur, where doctors declared Sahil Sharma dead.
The other two people remain under treatment in serious condition, the report said. The precise circumstances that led to the head-on collision have not yet been established. Durgapur police are investigating how the accident occurred.
The crash took place during the Durga Puja period, when roads around pandal areas and public spaces typically see increased movement late into the night. The deaths have renewed local concern about road safety during periods of heightened evening and night-time traffic, although the report did not provide details on road lighting, vehicle speed, helmet use or traffic enforcement at the site.
Dibyendu Gain, general secretary of the BJP’s Durgapur East constituency unit, said local people took the injured to hospital. He appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules and wear helmets while riding motorcycles. The police investigation and the medical treatment of the two surviving injured people are continuing.
