A 24-year-old student was detained after a car allegedly driven at high speed under the influence of alcohol hit three to four two-wheelers near MIT College on Paud Road in Kothrud, Pune, on Thursday evening, according to Kothrud police. Three to four two-wheeler riders suffered minor injuries, eyewitnesses told the local media report.
The crash occurred at about 8 pm on the road between MIT College and Kothrud Depot. The car was travelling towards Kothrud Depot when it allegedly struck several two-wheelers, causing confusion and disruption in the area. Local residents stopped the vehicle after the incident and handed the driver over to the police.
Kothrud police reached the spot after receiving information about the crash. Senior Police Inspector Arun Ghodke said the driver is a student at MIT College and lives in the Sinhagad Road area. Police have sent him to a hospital for medical examination.
Ghodke said the initial information indicated that the young man may have been driving after consuming alcohol. The medical examination is expected to establish the relevant facts. The report said that no complaint had been filed at the time of publication and that further legal action was being taken.
The reported injuries were described as minor, but the incident involved several vulnerable road users on a busy urban corridor. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians often share constrained road space in dense parts of Pune, where high traffic volumes can magnify the consequences of a loss of vehicle control.
The incident also drew attention to existing movement and street-design problems in Kothrud. The area already experiences traffic congestion and a shortage of footpaths, according to the report. Those conditions can leave pedestrians with limited protected space and increase their exposure to moving traffic.
The immediate police process includes the driver’s medical examination, recording of complaints if filed, and determination of the applicable legal provisions. The final status of the injuries, the medical findings and the subsequent action against the driver were not available in the supplied report.
