An Indian Army personnel was arrested after allegedly assaulting a doctor and verbally abusing nurses at the government hospital in Tirukattupalli in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district, according to a report by Dinamalar. The incident followed a dispute over the waiting time at the hospital, after the man brought his unwell mother for treatment.
The arrested man was identified as Praveen, 29, a resident of the Kudamuruti river bank area in Tirukattupalli. He serves as a Naik in the Indian Army and is posted in Kashmir. He had returned to his native place on leave, the report said.
Praveen took his mother, Kala, to the Tirukattupalli government hospital after she developed health problems on the morning of October 9. A dispute reportedly broke out after he had to wait for a long time at the facility. The report said he argued with the doctor and nursing staff present at the hospital.
During the confrontation, Praveen allegedly grabbed the shirt of Dr Suresh Ambi, 35, and pushed him to the ground. He also allegedly used abusive language against female nurses who came to intervene, according to the complaint described in the report.
The doctor and nurses subsequently submitted a complaint against Praveen at the Tirukattupalli police station. The medical staff also boycotted work following the incident, the report said. The police registered a case and arrested Praveen.
The incident places attention on the immediate safety of medical staff and patients inside a government healthcare facility. In this case, the dispute began during a visit for treatment but escalated into an alleged physical assault on a doctor and the reported abuse of nurses. The staff work boycott also created an operational impact at the hospital, although the report did not provide details on the duration of the protest or whether services were disrupted beyond the period mentioned.
The report did not specify the sections of law invoked in the police case, whether Praveen was produced before a court, or whether the hospital administration issued a separate statement. It also did not provide details about the condition of Dr Suresh Ambi after the alleged assault or the medical status of Praveen’s mother.
The immediate legal step reported by the police is the arrest following the complaint from the doctor and nursing staff. Further proceedings will depend on the investigation and subsequent court process.
