Delhi’s Old RTR flyover, a key link from Indira Gandhi International Airport towards Vasant Vihar, was temporarily closed on October 21 after cracks were found at two locations on its carriageway. The Public Works Department has begun repairs, while traffic has been diverted to the service road alongside the flyover.
The closure stops vehicles from using the affected flyover section while repair work is under way. Traffic personnel have been deployed to guide motorists through the diversion, according to a report by Jagran – New Delhi.
The cracks were detected at two points on the carriageway. The report did not specify the length, depth or structural nature of the cracks, nor did it state whether they were found in the deck, expansion joints or another component of the flyover. The available information also does not indicate whether any incident or vehicle damage preceded the closure.
The Old RTR flyover carries traffic between the airport side of the corridor and Vasant Vihar. With vehicles being directed to the adjoining service road, commuters using the route may face slower movement, particularly during peak travel periods. Travellers have been advised to follow traffic staff instructions, use alternative routes where possible and allow additional time for their journeys.
The PWD is carrying out the repair work and the flyover is expected to reopen by Monday morning, October 26, 2026. The reopening, however, will depend on completion of the repairs and clearance on safety grounds. The report does not provide details of the repair method or identify the agency conducting the safety assessment.
The temporary closure places the service road at the centre of traffic management on a corridor used by airport-bound and airport-originating traffic. The extent of the impact will depend on how long the repair work continues and whether the diversion can handle the redirected vehicles without additional restrictions.
For commuters, the immediate issue is route planning rather than a permanent change to the corridor. Motorists have been asked to check their routes before leaving and to factor in possible delays. The PWD’s safety clearance will determine when normal traffic can resume on the Old RTR flyover.
