Delhi Traffic Restrictions Tighten on Sunday as Protests Expand

Delhi traffic restrictions will remain in force on Sunday, with diversions expected at 30 key points across Central Delhi as the Cockroach Janta Party and student organisations continue protests demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Delhi Traffic Police said restrictions would begin at 6 am and would be adjusted according to the prevailing law and order situation.

An advisory issued late Saturday said traffic movement could be affected around Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place, Mandi House, Patel Chowk and other major intersections. Commuters travelling through New Delhi and Central Delhi have been asked to avoid non-essential journeys and allow additional time to reach railway stations, inter-state bus terminals and the airport.

The restrictions follow a fresh protest call by the CJP, which has said marches to Jantar Mantar would continue daily until its demand is met. At a press conference at HKS Surjeet Bhawan on Saturday, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde said the organisation would maintain its protest programme. He also alleged that protesters, including Abhijeet Dipke, had faced inhumane treatment during detention by the Delhi Police.

The Students’ Federation of India has also announced peaceful demonstrations. SFI general secretary Srijan Bhattacharyya said locations where students were stopped by police barricades would become their protest sites, according to the report.

The traffic advisory identified several stretches where movement may be regulated or diverted. These include the Ashoka Road–Jantar Mantar Road roundabout, the Tolstoy Marg–Janpath crossing, the Jai Singh Road–Sansad Marg crossing, the Rail Bhawan roundabout, Patel Chowk and Gol Dak Khana. Routes around Connaught Place may also experience disruption.

Other locations listed by the traffic police include Mandi House, the Minto Road–Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg junction, the Lodhi Road flyover, Neela Gumbad roundabout, the Samrat Hotel roundabout, the Sardar Patel Marg–Panchsheel Marg crossing, and the underpasses beneath the Bhikaji Cama Place and Moti Bagh flyovers.

The advisory did not announce a fixed closure schedule for all 30 points. Instead, the traffic police said restrictions would be regulated or relaxed through real-time assessments of the situation. This means diversions and stoppages may change during the day depending on protest movement, police deployment and crowd conditions.

The traffic police has asked commuters to follow updates on its official website and social media platforms before beginning their journeys. Travellers using Central Delhi routes to access rail, inter-state bus and air connections have been advised to plan for delays and consider avoiding affected corridors where possible.
