Delhi Protests Draw Detentions as Abhijit Deepke Wins Conditional Bail

Delhi protests near Connaught Place as police manage access to a public demonstration site

Abhijit Deepke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party, was granted conditional bail in Delhi on Saturday after being detained over a proposed ‘Lahra Do Tiranga’ protest at Connaught Place’s Central Park. AISA national president Neha Bora, who was also detained by Delhi Police on Friday, was released early on Saturday.

Deepke was detained on Friday evening while leaving his residence to attend the protest. He had appealed to supporters to gather at Central Park in small groups for the planned demonstration. The event was not permitted to proceed, according to the report.

Deepke was produced before a Special Executive Magistrate’s court at Mandir Marg police station on Saturday. His lawyer, Ratna Singh, head of the CJP’s legal department, argued on his behalf. The court granted him bail against a personal bond of Rs 50,000, with a condition that he maintain peace.

A large number of Deepke’s supporters gathered outside Mandir Marg police station during the proceedings. The detention and bail process brought the management of public demonstrations in central Delhi into focus, particularly around spaces such as Connaught Place’s Central Park and Jantar Mantar, where authorities regulate gatherings and access.

Bora was detained from the Mandi House area on Friday evening and held at the R K Puram police station overnight. She was released early on Saturday. In a post on X, Bora said she had been released after being kept in custody for several hours unlawfully. That claim was made by Bora and was not independently established in the supplied report.

The report also said that Saurabh Das, the CJP’s chief spokesperson, and national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka had been sent to Tihar jail for five days of judicial custody after allegedly jumping over the iron gate at the restricted Jantar Mantar site and waving the national flag. Their release was expected on Saturday night, although the report did not confirm that it had taken place.

The developments followed the proposed Central Park protest and separate activity at Jantar Mantar. The immediate next steps were the expected release of Das and Ranka and continued legal proceedings arising from the detentions and the alleged breach of restrictions at Jantar Mantar.
