Delhi Protest Security Tightened After CJP Leaders Released

Delhi Police has tightened security around Jantar Mantar after three Cockroach Janata Party leaders were released by an executive magistrate, following their preventive detention ahead of protests over alleged irregularities in the voter-list Special Intensive Revision.

Abhijeet Dipke, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained before a planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar and later produced before the SEM Court in Delhi Cantonment. According to Delhi Police, action was taken under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which concern preventive measures to maintain public order and arrests to prevent cognisable offences.

The three leaders were released after furnishing a Rs 50,000 bond for maintaining peace and good behaviour for one year. The police said the required legal procedures were followed before their production before the executive magistrate on October 11, 2026.

The detentions took place after the CJP announced a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10. Delhi Police said more than 7,000 protesters were detained at different locations, preventing them from reaching the protest venue. Opposition leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were also detained while attempting to participate, according to the report.

The police action has had a direct impact on movement through the capital, with restrictions imposed around the protest activity and roads subsequently reopened after the earlier demonstration. The renewed call for a protest at Jantar Mantar has led authorities to increase security arrangements across the city.

More than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel have reportedly been deployed for security. The arrangements are intended to manage access to the protest area, prevent unauthorised gatherings and maintain traffic movement around central Delhi. A separate traffic advisory was also issued in connection with the planned demonstration.

The protests have been called by the CJP and opposition parties, which are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists. The allegations and the demand remain political claims made by the protesting parties; the report does not provide an independent finding on them.

With the leaders released but a fresh protest call still active, Delhi authorities are continuing security and traffic-management measures around Jantar Mantar. Further changes to restrictions will depend on the police and administrative response to the planned gathering.
