Delhi Police has divided the New Delhi district into 20 zones and intensified security arrangements ahead of a protest planned at Jantar Mantar on Saturday by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), officials told Live Hindustan on Friday.
Each zone will be monitored by a joint commissioner, a deputy commissioner and an additional deputy commissioner to ensure close supervision of law-and-order arrangements, according to the report. Heads of different police units who hold the rank of special commissioner will also monitor the zones and coordinate with senior officers if any situation arises.
The police have also installed additional CCTV cameras at important locations across the New Delhi, Central Delhi and North Delhi districts. The expanded surveillance and zonal deployment are part of preparations for the proposed demonstration and are intended to help officials track developments across areas surrounding the protest venue and other key locations.
The CJP has called the demonstration over what it describes as irregularities in the SIR process. The protest is seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The report does not provide further details of the alleged irregularities or the specific demands beyond the call for the Election Commissioner’s resignation.
A meeting of senior Delhi Police officers was held at police headquarters on Friday to review the arrangements. According to a police source cited by Live Hindustan, the meeting also discussed coordination between different police units so that officers can respond in a coordinated manner to any law-and-order situation.
Further security review meetings are scheduled for 4 am, 6 am and 7 am on Saturday, the report said. The timing indicates that the police will reassess the arrangements at multiple stages before and during the proposed demonstration.
Delhi Police has denied permission for the protest at Jantar Mantar. A senior police officer said the application was submitted late and that rules had allegedly been violated during an earlier CJP protest. The officer said organisers are required to inform the police 10 days before a demonstration under the prescribed procedure.
The denial of permission does not remove the immediate administrative challenge posed by the proposed gathering. Police preparations now involve multiple districts, senior-level supervision, additional CCTV coverage and repeated coordination meetings. The next formal step identified in the report is the series of security reviews scheduled for Saturday morning.
