The Delhi Police’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit is examining a viral video that allegedly shows social media influencer Amir Shokeen subjecting a youth from Tripura to racial abuse and humiliation, after a formal complaint sought an urgent investigation and preservation of digital evidence.
The development was reported on October 22, after the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER) wrote to the IFSO unit asking it to investigate the video. The complaint was submitted by the Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD) on October 21 to the joint commissioner of police, SPUNER.
According to the report, the complaint alleged that the video showed a person from Tripura being subjected to sexual assault, harassment and humiliating treatment by a social media content creator. It identified the Instagram account @amirshoksen as allegedly linked to the incident and asked police to verify the identity and role of the account operator, as well as anyone else who may have participated in or recorded the alleged incident.
The forum also requested that police preserve the original recording, metadata, account details and upload history. It sought measures to prevent further harassment or intimidation of the youth and requested registration of a first information report wherever warranted by the facts and applicable legal provisions.
The video has triggered condemnation from political leaders in Delhi and Tripura. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the accused would face action and that Delhi and Tripura Police would take the matter forward. “This evil man will be punished. There was a delay in lodging the official complaint, but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson,” Rijiju said in a post on X.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier directed the state’s director general of police to coordinate with Delhi Police over the matter. Leaders across party lines in Tripura also condemned the alleged conduct and demanded legal action.
Shokeen has apologised in videos posted online. In one apology, he said the video was intended as a joke and sought forgiveness from people in Tripura and from Saha. He said he had deleted the video and claimed that he had made more than 2,000 videos without hurting any community. In another Instagram video, he claimed that the recording was scripted.
The police investigation will determine the identity and roles of those involved, establish the circumstances in which the video was recorded and circulated, and assess whether the conduct attracts criminal liability under applicable law. Further details of the IFSO examination and any police action were awaited at the time of publication.
