Delhi Police Files FIR Against Kejriwal Over Bangla Sahib Protest

Bangla Sahib FIR follows a protest near the gurdwara in central Delhi

Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, party legislators and other leaders over alleged disruption and political sloganeering at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The case was filed on the basis of a complaint from the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), according to a report by Jagran. The complaint alleges that AAP workers and supporters entered the gurdwara premises on 10 October and conducted political activity there, affecting the religious sanctity of the site.

The protest was linked to opposition to the proposed Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. A large number of demonstrators had gathered at the gurdwara complex before attempting to proceed towards Jantar Mantar. Police stopped the group from moving ahead and detained more than 100 people, the report said.

The DSGMC has asked police to identify those involved using video footage submitted with the complaint. It has also alleged that AAP leaders and legislators later shared videos and social media posts presenting a misleading or one-sided account of the incident and placing responsibility on the gurdwara management committee.

Police have begun examining the footage and the allegations made in the complaint. The investigation is expected to establish what happened inside the premises, identify people who participated in the alleged demonstration and determine the roles of individual leaders and supporters.

The case places a prominent religious institution and a major political protest within the same public-order dispute. Bangla Sahib is located in central Delhi, an area that regularly handles political gatherings, religious activity, commuter movement and heightened police deployment. The reported incident also involved the management of access around a religious complex while protesters were attempting to reach a designated demonstration site.

The FIR follows the DSGMC’s complaint after the protest and police detentions. The available report does not provide details of the specific sections invoked in the case or confirm whether any accused person has been arrested in connection with the FIR.

Registration of an FIR records the beginning of a criminal investigation and does not establish that the allegations against Kejriwal, the AAP leaders or the supporters are proven. The police inquiry into the complaint and the submitted video footage remains under way.
