Delhi Police Detains CJP Founder Before Connaught Place March

Delhi Police detention linked to a proposed march near Connaught Place in New Delhi

Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Friday afternoon before the party’s proposed Tiranga March in Connaught Place, saying the action was taken because the event did not have permission and could create a law-and-order challenge in New Delhi district.

According to information provided by the New Delhi district police and reported by Jagran, a police team reached the house where Dipke was staying in Delhi’s Jhandewalan at about 2 pm. Officers took him with them after arriving at the residence, which belongs to Nationalist Congress Party spokesperson Anish Gawande. Dipke was staying there during his current visit to the capital.

The proposed march was scheduled to take place in the Central Park area of Connaught Place on Friday evening. Police had made clear that permission would not be granted for the event, citing security and law-and-order considerations as well as what the report described as the CJP’s previous conduct. The New Delhi district is treated as a sensitive area because it contains major public spaces, commercial zones and important government locations.

The police action came before the planned gathering, indicating that the administration was seeking to prevent an unauthorised procession from reaching the Connaught Place area. The report said police had moved into an alert position over the proposed event and would not permit the CJP to hold the Tiranga March in the central park area.

Connaught Place is one of Delhi’s busiest public and commercial districts, with heavy pedestrian movement, offices, shops, restaurants and regular traffic through the surrounding roads. Any large gathering or procession there requires coordination between the organisers and authorities because it can affect access, crowd movement and security arrangements in the central New Delhi zone.

The detention followed earlier activity by the party in other cities. Jagran’s report referred to a separate CJP rally in Mumbai for which permission had reportedly been granted, as well as an earlier announcement by Dipke concerning a new protest date and location in Delhi. The report did not provide details of the police detention procedure, the duration of custody or whether any case had been registered.

The immediate administrative issue is whether the proposed gathering will proceed despite the absence of permission. Police have said that the march will not be allowed in Connaught Place on security and law-and-order grounds. Further developments will depend on the authorities’ next action and on whether organisers attempt to assemble at another location.
