Delhi Police have detained four men in connection with a viral video that allegedly shows a protester being assaulted on DDU Marg, according to a police communication. The action was taken after police received information that the men were planning to leave the Delhi-NCR region and subsequently go underground.
The incident reportedly took place on a stretch of DDU Marg under the jurisdiction of Kamla Market police station. Police said the video had circulated widely on social media, where multiple handles, including those associated with the Indian Youth Congress, the All India Students’ Association and the Cockroach Janta Party, reposted it and shared posters targeting the individuals allegedly seen assaulting the woman.
The police communication identified the four men as Raman Saini, 50; Vivekanand alias Vivek, 32; Kapil Kumar, 27; and Ravinder Singh alias Govind Hindu, 35. Police said the men were discreetly traced and taken into custody after the video gained traction online and authorities assessed a possibility that they could abscond.
No complaint had been received from the alleged victim, or from any other person or organisation, at the time of the police communication, according to the report. The account therefore remains based on the video circulated online and the police action described in the communication; the allegation shown in the video has not been established through a reported complaint or court finding.
The case highlights how police responses to incidents in public spaces can begin through digital evidence and intelligence even before a formal complaint is registered. In this instance, the reported location falls within central Delhi, an area that regularly hosts political gatherings, demonstrations and public activity, making the handling of crowd-related incidents a matter of both policing and public order.
Police said the four men had been taken into custody and that further necessary action could be taken during the day, as required. The communication did not provide details of any charges, the legal sections being applied or whether a formal complaint had subsequently been registered.
