Delhi Police Block CJP Protest, Detain Leaders at IGI Airport

Delhi protest security outside Jantar Mantar with police barricades and an empty demonstration area

Delhi Police detained three senior leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Indira Gandhi International Airport on October 10, after the party announced a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, according to a report by Jagran. Police restrictions also prevented demonstrators from reaching Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street and India Gate.

The three leaders identified in the report were Abhijeet Deepke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurabh Das. Jagran reported that they arrived in Delhi by air and were detained by police while still inside the aircraft at IGI Airport. Their mobile phones and other electronic devices were also seized after Deepke allegedly attempted to post on social media during the detention.

According to the Delhi Police account cited by Jagran, people who reached Jantar Mantar, India Gate or Parliament Street during the morning were taken into custody. A heavy police presence was deployed at the three locations, while routes leading to Jantar Mantar were reported to have been closed. The restrictions meant that protesters were unable to reach the designated demonstration area.

Jantar Mantar is one of Delhi’s principal designated spaces for public demonstrations, while Parliament Street and India Gate are high-security locations with significant pedestrian, traffic and symbolic importance. Any restrictions in this central corridor can affect access to nearby roads, public transport links and surrounding public spaces, even when crowd movement remains limited.

Jagran also reported that Delhi Police had established checkpoints in Delhi and adjoining cities. Vehicles were being checked, and passengers at railway stations were questioned before being allowed to exit, according to the report. These measures extended the security operation beyond the immediate protest venue to the city’s entry points and transport nodes.

The police deployment resulted in what Jagran described as a quiet situation at Jantar Mantar, India Gate and Parliament Street because demonstrators were detained before reaching the locations. The report did not provide the total number of people detained in connection with the CJP protest, the legal provisions used for the detentions, or the duration for which the three leaders and other individuals would remain in custody.

The episode highlights the operational consequences of managing protests in central Delhi, where designated demonstration spaces sit close to government offices, major roads and nationally significant public areas. The reported use of airport surveillance, road checkpoints, railway-station questioning and site-level deployment shows that the response was organised across multiple access points rather than limited to Jantar Mantar itself.

The CJP had called for a large demonstration and sought public participation at Jantar Mantar. With its senior leaders detained before reaching the city’s protest zone and access routes restricted, the planned demonstration did not take place as announced, according to the Jagran report. Further details on the detentions and police action were not available in the supplied report.
