A 29-year-old man died after he was allegedly assaulted by bouncers and nightclub staff in northwest Delhi following a dispute over beer spilled on a woman, police said. Several people have been arrested and investigators have seized the venue’s CCTV digital video recorder to establish the sequence of events and identify others involved.
The incident took place late on Saturday at a nightclub in the area under the Sarai Rohilla police station, according to the report. The deceased, identified as Daljeet, lived in Raghuvir Nagar and is survived by his wife, eight-year-old son and father.
According to police and details reported by news agency PTI, Daljeet had gone to the nightclub with friends when one of them allegedly spilled beer on a woman. An argument followed, after which the club’s bouncers allegedly assaulted Daljeet and his friends. The group reportedly apologised, but the assault allegedly continued.
Waiters at the nightclub allegedly joined the attack, using sticks and glass bottles to beat the group. When Daljeet and his friends attempted to leave, the attackers allegedly dragged them back inside and assaulted them again, the report said.
Daljeet sustained the most serious injuries. His friends took him to his residence in Raghuvir Nagar, where he collapsed near the entrance. He was subsequently taken to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police have arrested some people in connection with the case and are working to identify and apprehend the remaining accused. The CCTV digital video recorder seized from the nightclub is being examined to determine what happened inside the venue and to establish the roles of those involved.
The case places attention on the responsibility of nightlife establishments to prevent violence and maintain safe premises for customers. The reported use of multiple staff members in an alleged assault, and the reported difficulty faced by the group in leaving the venue, will form part of the investigation into the incident.
The police investigation remains underway. Further action will depend on the CCTV examination, the identification of other accused persons and the evidence collected in the case.
