A passenger who allegedly tried to flee after a suspicious object appeared during baggage screening was apprehended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Delhi Metro’s Jama Masjid station on October 18, officials said. The passenger was handed over to the local police along with his belongings for further investigation.
The CISF said the incident began when a dense object was detected on the X-ray baggage inspection system at the station. After security personnel frisked the passenger, he collected his bag from the scanner and ran out through the women’s frisking enclosure, according to the force’s account.
A CISF jawan who noticed the passenger’s movements pursued him as he moved towards the underground station’s exit. The passenger used the escalator, while the jawan took the stairs and caught up with him near Gate No. 1. Another CISF personnel joined the chase before the passenger was brought back to the station.
The force released a 27-second video from CCTV footage on its X account on October 19. The edited footage shows security personnel frisking the passenger, followed by the chase through the station and his apprehension near the exit.
The CISF said its personnel later found an unidentified semi-solid substance concealed in a stitched portion of the passenger’s undergarment, which was kept in his bag. Officials said they suspected that the material could be gold paste, but added that the object was still being examined and had not yet been conclusively identified.
The passenger reportedly claimed to be an overseas Indian residing in Kuala Lumpur. The CISF did not identify him in its statement. The force said he and his belongings were handed over to the local police for further investigation.
The incident places attention on the layered security process at Delhi Metro stations, where baggage screening, frisking and surveillance systems operate together. In this case, the CISF’s account says the initial alert came from the X-ray screening system, while the subsequent pursuit was triggered by the passenger’s attempt to leave the screening area.
The police investigation will determine the nature of the recovered substance and whether any offence has been committed. No further details about the passenger or the material were provided in the CISF statement.
