Delhi Metro May Close 57 Stations as Rail Cancellations Hit October 10

Delhi Metro stations closure advisory affecting commuters near central Delhi

Delhi Metro may restrict entry and exit at 57 stations from 9 pm on October 9, while Indian Railways has cancelled Mail and Express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10, amid proposed protests and concerns over crowd movement and road congestion.

Delhi Police asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to reduce train frequency and close the gates at stations located near Jantar Mantar and other sensitive areas. The restrictions will remain in place until the situation normalises, according to a police letter dated October 8.

The stations listed in the advisory include Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, New Delhi, Kashmere Gate, Mandi House, ITO, Patel Chowk and Supreme Court. The proposed closures span multiple Metro lines and also include Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Jamia Millia Islamia and Sarai Kale Khan–Nizamuddin.

The police action comes ahead of a youth-led protest announced by the CJP at Jantar Mantar on October 10 over allegations of vote theft. The source report said authorities cited the possibility of unruly crowds moving towards sensitive areas as the reason for asking DMRC to alter operations. The police direction is an advisory to reduce frequency and close gates, rather than an announcement that all 57 stations will necessarily remain closed throughout the day.

The listed stations cover several central Delhi interchanges and locations around government, commercial and transport districts. They include Janpath, Lok Kalyan Marg, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Delhi Gate, Khan Market, R. K. Ashram Marg, Jhandewalan, Indraprastha, Shivaji Stadium, INA, Jor Bagh, Arjangarh, Jangpura, Ashram, Kalindi Kunj, Jasola, Chawri Bazar, Jama Masjid, Karol Bagh and Rajendra Place.

The list also extends to stations such as Vishwavidyalaya, Vidhan Sabha, Civil Lines, Inderlok, G. T. B. Nagar, Kanhaiya Nagar, Netaji Subhash Place, Azadpur, Adarsh Nagar, Jahangir Puri, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Majlis Park, Shalimar Bagh, Seelampur, Maujpur, Jafrabad, Welcome, Yamuna Vihar, Khazuri Khas, Shahdara, Rithala, Rohini East and Rohini West.

Separately, the railway department’s coaching directorate ordered the cancellation of all Mail and Express trains scheduled to reach New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10. The order cited the possibility of severe road traffic congestion around the two stations.

The railway cancellations are expected to affect passengers arriving in the capital during the morning period, while the Metro advisory could disrupt onward movement between railway stations, central Delhi and other parts of the network. The report did not provide a complete list of cancelled trains or details of alternative arrangements for affected passengers.

CJP activist Abhijeet Dipke alleged on X that activists had been detained ahead of the protest and said the march would continue. That allegation was not independently confirmed in the report. The police and railway measures are linked to anticipated crowd movement and congestion, with both advisories remaining subject to conditions on October 10.
