Delhi Metro improves commuter safety with railings at interchange stations

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has begun installing steel railings across platforms at all 29 existing interchange stations. These barriers are being placed on both up and down platforms to streamline foot traffic, guide commuters behind safety lines, and reduce the risk of accidents and service disruptions caused by overcrowding or objects falling on tracks.

With 26 stations already equipped under Phases I to III and the remainder nearing completion, DMRC officials say the installations aim to tackle the intense footfall that characterizes these junctions. The initiative supports commuter discipline during boarding and deboarding, easing platform congestion and improving operational flow. New stations under Phase IV will also be fitted with similar barriers, forming part of DMRC’s broader strategy to reinforce safety infrastructure through scalable, low‑carbon upgrades.

This installation complements other ongoing improvements, including Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) on select lines, but comes at significantly lower financial and environmental cost. Built for durability and designed with inclusive, gender‑neutral mobility in mind, the steel railings are both cost‑effective and accessible. The work is carried out during the Metro’s night‑time maintenance window, ensuring zero disruption to daily service while upholding high operational standards.

By promoting safety, reducing delays, and encouraging greater reliance on public transport, the initiative strengthens Delhi’s goal of a greener, more equitable transit system. Passenger feedback has been positive, with many noting clearer movement paths and a greater sense of safety. As cities seek smarter ways to manage growing populations, the Delhi Metro’s latest move exemplifies how incremental, commuter‑focused solutions can make mass transit more secure, sustainable, and inclusive.
