Delhi Electric Bus Fleet to Cross 6,900 With 200 New Buses

Delhi electric buses lined up at a depot with charging infrastructure

Delhi is set to add 200 electric buses to its public transport fleet next week, taking the total number of buses in the capital beyond 6,900, according to a report by Jagran – New Delhi. The buses are planned to be launched from Anand Vihar on October 14, alongside five new charging stations.

The expansion is intended to increase pollution-free public transport in the capital. However, the addition of buses will also require the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to ensure that the vehicles are deployed effectively, operated according to schedule and supported by adequate charging infrastructure.

The reported launch comes at a time when the DTC is also facing an administrative gap. Jitendra Yadav was transferred from the post of managing director on October 4, leaving the position vacant. The vacancy raises questions about management and administrative coordination as the corporation prepares to absorb the additional buses into its operations.

The new buses will need to be allocated across different routes based on passenger demand. The benefit to commuters will depend not only on the size of the fleet but also on whether services become more frequent and buses are available consistently on routes with high demand. DTC will therefore have to coordinate route deployment, timetables and the number of trips operated on each corridor.

Charging capacity is another immediate operational requirement. As the electric fleet expands, depots will need sufficient charging points, reliable electricity supply and arrangements that allow buses to be charged without disrupting scheduled services. The five charging stations planned for launch are expected to strengthen the available network, although the report notes that charging infrastructure will need to grow in line with the fleet.

The corporation will also have to address passenger-facing issues linked to the Pink Saheli card system, which provides benefits to women passengers. Reported priorities include helping women understand how to use the cards, ensuring that verification works smoothly inside buses and resolving technical problems that may affect access.

The fleet expansion will place greater responsibility on DTC to match buses with demand, add services on crowded routes and improve coordination in daily operations. Simply increasing the number of vehicles will not guarantee better public transport unless the buses are available where passengers need them and run according to reliable schedules.

The planned launch from Anand Vihar on October 14 is the next stated milestone. The effectiveness of the expansion will depend on the deployment of the 200 buses, the commissioning of the five charging stations and DTC’s ability to maintain regular operations as the fleet grows.
