An 18-month-old boy died after the scooter carrying him and his family collided with a three-wheeled cargo vehicle in north Delhi’s Derawal Nagar on Monday afternoon, police said. The cargo vehicle driver, identified as Girish, has been arrested and an FIR registered at Model Town police station.
According to police, the child was travelling with his family from their home in Cigarette Wala Bagh, Model Town, to visit a doctor. His mother was holding him on her lap while her brother was riding the scooter when the collision occurred.
The impact caused the child to slip from his mother’s arms and fall onto the road. He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died, police said.
The case has brought together several road-safety risks that occur on Delhi’s local streets: mixed traffic involving two-wheelers and cargo vehicles, the vulnerability of children travelling on scooters, and the consequences of a collision in a dense residential area. The available police account does not provide details about the speed of either vehicle, the road conditions, or whether any traffic violation had been recorded at the site.
Police have registered the case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning rash driving, causing death by negligence and endangering human life. The cargo vehicle driver has been arrested in connection with the crash.
The incident occurred while the family was travelling for medical care, according to the police account. The child’s death followed the injuries sustained in the collision, despite being taken to a nearby hospital.
The investigation will determine the circumstances of the crash and the specific conduct attributed to the driver. Police action is continuing under the FIR registered at Model Town police station.
