The Delhi government has launched four agricultural market infrastructure projects covering road reconstruction, drainage repairs, covered grain storage and technology-enabled vehicle weighing at markets across the Capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stones for the projects at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee office in Azadpur on Friday.
The projects are intended to improve the movement and handling of agricultural produce, while addressing infrastructure problems in some of Delhi’s largest wholesale markets. The works will cover Keshopur Fruit and Vegetable Market, Narela New Grain Market, Azadpur New Vegetable Market and Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Market.
At Keshopur, internal roads that are more than 20 years old will be rebuilt at a cost of ₹9.48 crore. The Chief Minister’s Office said the reconstruction would facilitate the movement of commercial vehicles and agricultural produce within the market.
Two temporary sheds will be constructed at Narela’s New Grain Market, which covers approximately 33 acres. According to an official statement, the covered storage areas will help protect grain from rain and other adverse weather conditions. The statement did not specify the construction timeline or the total cost of the sheds.
At Azadpur New Vegetable Market, nearly 30-year-old sewerage and drainage lines in Blocks B and C will be repaired. The planned work will address sinking, damaged and blocked pipelines, as well as water leakage. The government said the repairs are intended to reduce waterlogging, improve cleanliness and support regular market operations.
Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Market will also receive a ‘Slow-Speed Weigh-in-Motion System’ at its entry and exit gates. The system will allow commercial vehicles to be weighed without coming to a complete halt. Electronic recording of vehicle weights is expected to improve transparency and accountability in market operations, the Chief Minister said.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Gupta said agricultural markets play a vital role in connecting farmers with marketplaces. “Better infrastructure helps ensure the smooth movement, proper handling and safety of agricultural produce. The Delhi government aims to modernise market infrastructure and provide facilities that meet the needs of farmers, traders and other market users,” she said.
The projects were announced under the government’s Seva Sankalp Abhiyan. The event was attended by MP Yogendra Chandolia, Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, BJP MLA Raj Kumar Bhatia and other officials and representatives. The supplied announcement did not provide completion dates, tender details or further information on the implementing agencies for the individual works.
