DDA Plans Wooden Houseboat Centre at Yamuna Park

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has unveiled plans for a unique houseboat-style convention centre at Baansera Park in Sarai Kale Khan.

Drawing inspiration from the traditional houseboats of Kashmir’s Dal Lake, this structure aims to blend cultural heritage with sustainable urban development. The project is part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate the Yamuna floodplain into a vibrant public space. The convention centre will be a multi-level structure, standing 8.8 metres tall, and will feature intricate Persian-style carvings. Crafted by expert artisans, the base will be constructed using deodar wood, while the superstructure will incorporate cedar, walnut, and chinar wood for interior panels and ceilings. Despite its houseboat design, the structure will be permanently affixed to the ground, ensuring stability and longevity.

Inside, the facility will offer a range of amenities, including a meeting room for 15 individuals, a reception area with a waiting lounge, dining facilities with a pantry, and gallery space. The interiors will showcase Kashmiri wood-carved jail, railings, and other features, providing visitors with an immersive cultural experience. Engineered wood flooring, fire-resistant panels, and sealed joints will ensure durability and safety. This initiative aligns with the vision of transforming the Yamuna floodplain into an eco-friendly and sustainable public space. Baansera Park, previously a wasteland, has been revitalized with the planting of 30,000 bamboo plants and the introduction of landscaped features. The park also hosts Café Bamboo Oasis, a fully air-conditioned café that opened in November 2024, further enhancing the area’s appeal.

The DDA anticipates the completion of the houseboat-style convention centre within 3–4 months of project allocation, with an estimated structural lifespan of 50 years. This project represents a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern sustainability, offering Delhiites a distinctive venue for events and gatherings.
