Connaught Place Central Park will remain closed to the public on October 16 and 17 after the New Delhi Municipal Council issued a notice citing administrative reasons, with the shutdown coming ahead of a proposed “Lehra do Tiranga” march by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
The notice, dated October 15 and issued by the NDMC director, states that Central Park “shall remain closed for general public on 16th October 2026 & 17th October 2026, due to administrative reasons.” The civic body did not provide further details in the notice about the arrangements or circumstances behind the closure.
The closure affects a central public space in Connaught Place, one of Delhi’s key commercial and public gathering areas. Visitors will not be able to access the park during the two-day period covered by the NDMC order.
CJP has scheduled its “Lehra do Tiranga” march at Central Park on Friday. However, the group had not been granted permission to hold the tricolour rally in Delhi at the time of the report. The proposed gathering is therefore separate from the NDMC’s formal notice, which cites administrative reasons rather than granting permission for the event.
According to a press note released by CJP, the march has been called to show solidarity with party leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das. The two leaders were sent to five-day judicial custody and lodged in Tihar Jail for allegedly violating their peace bonds and trespassing into Jantar Mantar, which has been denotified as a protest area.
The developments place Central Park at the centre of a wider public-order and access issue involving designated spaces for demonstrations in the capital. The source report did not specify whether the closure would be accompanied by restrictions on movement in Connaught Place, additional security arrangements or changes to traffic and pedestrian access around the park.
CJP has also received permission from Mumbai Police to hold a rally at Azad Maidan on Friday, according to the report. No equivalent permission for the Delhi march had been granted when the NDMC closure notice was issued.
The park is scheduled to reopen to the public after the two-day closure period, subject to any further notice from the civic body. The NDMC’s October 15 notice remains the stated basis for the temporary shutdown.
