Anthropic has introduced in-country inference for its Claude AI models in India through Amazon Bedrock, allowing requests sent through an India endpoint to be processed on servers located within the country. The move is aimed at enterprises in regulated sectors that need sensitive AI workloads to remain within India.
Under the arrangement, both the prompt sent to Claude and the model’s response are processed on servers in India when customers use the India endpoint. Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Web Services’ platform for accessing and deploying generative AI models, provides the infrastructure for local access to Claude.
Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are now available with in-country inference through Amazon Bedrock in India, according to the report. The capability is intended to address data residency and data-handling requirements raised by financial institutions, government bodies and large enterprises.
“Requests sent to Claude through the India endpoint are processed on servers located within India. That is what our customers in India, especially in regulated sectors, asked us for: to use Claude on their most critical work with every request processed within the country,” Irina Ghose, managing director at Anthropic India, told The Times of India.
Ghose said India is Anthropic’s second-largest market for Claude.ai. Software development accounts for 45.2% of the work-related tasks users bring to Claude in the country, the highest share among its markets, she said.
The company’s adoption in India has expanded beyond software development over the past year, with reported use across banking and payments, large enterprises, IT services, digital companies, healthcare, science and public services. The local processing capability could allow deployments that had been waiting for an in-country inference option to move ahead, Ghose said.
Several large technology companies are already using Claude in India. Tata Consultancy Services is equipping 50,000 associates with the model, while Infosys is combining Claude with its Topaz platform. Cognizant uses Claude in systems it builds for clients, and L&T Technology Services is embedding it in its engineering platforms.
The announcement places data location at the centre of enterprise AI deployment in India. For organisations handling financial, health, government or other sensitive information, the location where prompts and model outputs are processed is a key consideration in adopting generative AI. Anthropic’s India endpoint, delivered through Amazon Bedrock, provides a locally hosted processing route for those deployments.
