Chennai Property Tax Collection Hits Record Rs 1,436 Crore

The Greater Chennai Corporation has collected a record Rs 1,436.75 crore in property and professional taxes during the first half of the 2026–27 financial year, marking its highest revenue collection for the first six months of any financial year, according to the civic body.

The collection comprises Rs 1,124.69 crore in property tax and Rs 312.06 crore in professional tax. The corporation said its property tax collection rose 12.95 per cent compared with the first half of 2025–26, while professional tax collection increased 6.89 per cent.

A senior Greater Chennai Corporation official said the civic body had set a target of collecting Rs 1,200 crore in property tax alone during the first half of the current financial year. The corporation has also reported that 9.20 lakh assessees paid their property tax in full, while 45,000 assessees cleared their professional tax in full.

The record collection was reported after a sharp increase in receipts on September 30. On that day alone, the corporation collected Rs 50.26 crore in property tax and Rs 45.94 crore in professional tax. The combined one-day collection stood at Rs 96.20 crore.

Civic officials attributed the performance to regular monitoring and review, micro-level collection planning and an intensive tax collection drive conducted in July. These measures were implemented across the corporation’s tax administration during the first half of the financial year.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has 4.15 lakh registered property taxpayers and more than 1.2 lakh professional taxpayers within the city limits. Property tax is collected from registered properties, while professional tax applies to eligible professionals and other taxpayers covered by the civic body’s assessment system.

The corporation’s tax collection during the corresponding period of 2025–26 stood at Rs 1,283 crore. That total included Rs 992 crore in property tax and Rs 291 crore in professional tax. The latest first-half total is therefore Rs 153.75 crore higher than the collection reported for the same period last financial year.

The figures place property tax at the centre of the corporation’s revenue performance. The current first-half property tax collection of Rs 1,124.69 crore is Rs 132.69 crore higher than the Rs 992 crore collected during the first half of 2025–26. Professional tax receipts increased by Rs 21.06 crore from Rs 291 crore to Rs 312.06 crore.

The civic body’s next task will be to sustain collection through the remainder of the 2026–27 financial year. Officials have not announced further targets or collection measures in the report, but the corporation’s stated approach remains focused on monitoring, local-level planning and tax drives.
