Chennai Metro Yellow Line Opens 15-km Poonamallee–Vadapalani Stretch

Chennai Metro Rail Limited will begin passenger services on the 15-km Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II Corridor 4, or the Yellow Line, from 4 pm on Sunday, providing a new rapid-transit connection through 11 elevated stations across western Chennai.

The first services will follow the inauguration of the stretch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday afternoon. According to a press release issued by CMRL, trains will initially operate in both directions between 4 pm and 9 pm on Sunday. Regular passenger operations will begin at 7 am on Monday.

The new section connects Poonamallee Bypass with Vadapalani through residential and commercial areas, including Porur and surrounding neighbourhoods. The 11 stations are Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus Stand, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani.

From Monday, trains will run between 7 am and 9 pm in both directions. The last train will depart at 9 pm from both terminals, Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani.

On Mondays to Saturdays, services will operate every 10 minutes during peak periods, from 8 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 8 pm. During non-peak hours, the frequency will be one train every 15 minutes, covering the periods from 7 am to 8 am, 11 am to 5 pm and 8 pm to 9 pm.

On Sundays and public holidays, CMRL will not operate a separate peak-hour schedule. Trains will run every 15 minutes throughout the service period, from 7 am to 9 pm.

The opening gives commuters travelling between Poonamallee, Porur and Vadapalani an additional public transport option on a corridor that passes through several established residential and commercial areas. It also places key locations such as Porur Junction, Poonamallee Government Hospital and Vadapalani within the new elevated Metro section.

The commencement of passenger operations is a major operational milestone for Chennai Metro’s Phase II expansion. The newly opened stretch forms part of Corridor 4 and is expected to improve connectivity between the western suburbs and Vadapalani, where commuters can access the existing Metro network. CMRL’s published timetable and train frequencies will govern regular services from Monday onward.
