Chennai Airport could be handed over to a private operator under a long-term Public-Private Partnership lease, as the Union government examines a proposal to improve infrastructure and bring passenger services closer to international standards. Kolkata Airport is also being considered under the plan, according to a report cited by DT Next from Daily Thanthi.
The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation is examining the proposal, which would add the two airports to a group of major Indian airports already operated by private companies. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports are among the major facilities currently run by private operators, according to the report.
Under the proposed arrangement, the private operator would be responsible for day-to-day airport management, commercial areas such as shops and restaurants, and infrastructure development. Air traffic control and security would remain under the direct control of the Union government.
The proposal comes amid a long-running push for improved facilities at Chennai Airport. The Tamil Nadu government has sought better passenger services, stronger air traffic management and expanded cargo-handling capacity at the airport. These demands are linked to Chennai’s role as a major industrial and commercial centre, where airport capacity and service quality are part of the wider investment and logistics ecosystem.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last August, urging the privatisation of Chennai Airport’s management and an upgrade of its services, according to the report. The state government has argued that better airport infrastructure could help attract industrial investment and support the city’s economic activity.
The proposed model would separate airport operations and infrastructure management from functions that remain with the Centre. While a private company could manage passenger-facing services, commercial operations and development works, security and air traffic control would continue to be handled by central authorities.
For passengers, the expected changes would focus on terminal facilities, service delivery and the airport’s ability to handle growing traffic. For businesses, improvements in cargo facilities and airport operations could affect the movement of industrial goods and support Chennai’s wider logistics network. The report, however, does not specify the proposed operator, lease duration, investment amount or implementation schedule.
Officials expect Chennai Airport to be revamped with world-class facilities through the proposed project. The Union government’s examination of the plan is the next stated step; any formal decision, tender process or lease agreement would determine how and when private management is introduced.
