Chennai’s AC suburban trains will expand to the western section of the city from Friday, with Southern Railway introducing a 30-day trial service connecting Moore Market Complex, Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam. The weekday-only service will add air-conditioned rail travel for commuters on one of Chennai’s busiest suburban corridors.
The Chennai Division of Southern Railway will operate the service on a trial basis, officials said. The division is already running AC suburban trains on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu route through Tambaram, where the service has received a good response, according to the report.
The new service will be operated using the second air-conditioned suburban electrical multiple unit in the Chennai suburban network. A senior Southern Railway official said the train would cover the western section through services between Moore Market Complex, Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam.
The schedule has been planned in two operating sessions. In the morning, the train will leave Avadi for Arakkonam at 6.30 a.m., depart from Arakkonam for Moore Market Complex at 8 a.m. and run from Moore Market Complex to Avadi at 9.45 a.m. In the evening, services will operate from Avadi to Moore Market Complex at 5.25 p.m., from Moore Market Complex to Arakkonam at 6.30 p.m. and from Arakkonam to Avadi at 8.10 p.m.
The weekday schedule indicates that the service is aimed primarily at regular office and institutional commuters travelling along the western suburban rail corridor. The trial will allow Southern Railway to assess passenger response and the operational suitability of AC trains on routes extending beyond Avadi towards Tiruvallur and Arakkonam.
The expansion follows the introduction of AC suburban services on the Beach–Chengalpattu corridor via Tambaram. The existing service has been described by Southern Railway as receiving a favourable response, providing the basis for deploying another AC train on a different section of Chennai’s suburban network.
The service will also extend the reach of air-conditioned suburban travel beyond the city’s core stations. Moore Market Complex serves as the eastern terminus for the new western-section operations, while Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam are located along the suburban rail route serving Chennai’s expanding western urban region.
Southern Railway has not indicated in the supplied announcement whether the 30-day trial will be extended, converted into a regular service or modified after the trial period. The immediate operational milestone is the start of the weekday services on Friday, followed by the railway division’s assessment of their performance and passenger response.
