The Chandigarh State Election Commission has adopted the electoral rolls of the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency for the forthcoming municipal corporation election, clearing the voter-roll basis for polls across all 35 municipal wards before the corporation’s current term ends on January 7, 2027.
The decision was issued through a notification published in the Chandigarh Administration gazette on Monday. Dated October 9, 2026, the notification was issued by Dr Vijay Dev, Chandigarh’s state election commissioner, under Rule 2E of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (Preparation of Electoral Rolls) Rules, 1995.
The Commission said the existing electoral rolls for the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency were sufficient for the municipal election because they cover all 35 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh. The rolls had been revised under the Special Intensive Revision exercise.
The adoption gives the municipal election process a formally specified electoral-roll framework. Municipal corporation elections are used to elect councillors and constitute a new House, and the notification states that the general election must be held before the expiry of the corporation’s present term.
The move is significant for the city’s electoral administration because it avoids the need to prepare a separate ward-level voter-roll base where the parliamentary constituency rolls already cover the full municipal area. The notification, as reported, does not announce polling dates, the election schedule, nominations or the date for counting votes.
The 35 wards will therefore remain the territorial basis identified in the notification for the forthcoming election. The adopted rolls provide the voter list to be used for the municipal poll, while further election-related milestones will have to be announced by the State Election Commission.
The decision also places the next stage of the civic election process against a fixed administrative deadline. The current Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh term is scheduled to expire on January 7, 2027, and the Commission’s notification records that the election to choose councillors and constitute a new House must take place before that date.
For residents, the immediate development is the formal adoption of the electoral rolls rather than the announcement of polling. The notification identifies the parliamentary constituency rolls, revised through the Special Intensive Revision exercise, as the rolls considered adequate for voting in the municipal election.
The Chandigarh State Election Commission is the authority responsible for the election process described in the notification. Its next public announcements will determine the operational timetable for the poll, including the schedule and other formal stages required to elect councillors to the new municipal corporation House.
