Canacona Water Crisis Deepens as Pipeline Bursts Cut Supply

Pipeline bursts Canacona disrupting water supply along the Chapoli dam line

Pipeline bursts along the Chapoli dam water line have disrupted regular supply to Mokhard, Shristhal and Mastimal in Canacona taluka for three consecutive days, leaving residents and government office staff without water while repair work continues.

The damaged pipelines have caused extensive water leakage along the route from Chapoli dam to Canacona. Residents in the affected areas have reported that taps have remained dry, creating difficulty for households and public offices that depend on the network for their regular water supply.

Mokhard has been particularly affected because the area does not have an alternative source of water, according to panchayat member Ramu Naik. The disruption has therefore left residents dependent on the damaged piped network while the drinking water department works to restore the line.

The main supply pipelines run alongside the highway, making it difficult for officials to reach and repair the affected sections immediately. A local resident said heavy machinery cannot often be used at the locations, meaning that repair work has to be undertaken manually. This has contributed to delays in restoring the supply.

Pradeep Naik, assistant engineer at the Canacona water supply department, said repair work on the affected pipelines was being carried out on a war footing. The department has not indicated in the report when normal supply will resume, while residents continue to face disruption across the three affected areas.

The repeated nature of the pipeline bursts has also prompted residents to seek a permanent solution rather than repeated emergency repairs. Locals said recurring damage to the line continues to interrupt access to their regular drinking-water source, raising concerns about the resilience of the infrastructure serving settlements along the Chapoli dam–Canacona route.

For now, the immediate priority remains completing the ongoing repairs and restoring supply to Mokhard, Shristhal and Mastimal. The affected communities are awaiting the department’s next update on the repair progress and the resumption of regular water service.
