BMW Industries has commissioned a colour-coated steel production line at its Bokaro plant in Jharkhand, beginning the first phase of an ₹800-crore downstream steel expansion aimed at supplying higher-value products to India’s infrastructure, construction, automobile and consumer goods sectors.
The Kolkata-based company’s Managing Director Harsh Bansal said the line was commissioned on Monday as part of a greenfield downstream steel complex. The facility will initially serve the domestic market, while the company may explore exports depending on market opportunities and demand, he said.
BMW Industries currently manufactures steel coils, sheets, pipes and TMT rebars. With the new line, it has entered the production of colour-coated steel, a pre-painted metal product that combines structural strength with a protective metallic and organic paint coating designed to improve corrosion resistance.
Bansal said the company had commenced the first phase of the complex with the colour-coating line and had joined the select group of producers in India. The project has been set up under the government’s Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Speciality Steel, he said.
The first round of the PLI scheme was launched by the steel ministry in 2021 with an outlay of ₹6,322 crore. The programme seeks to promote domestic manufacturing of value-added steel grades, encourage technology adoption and help the Indian steel industry move up the value chain.
Colour-coated steel is used in applications where durability, corrosion protection and finished surfaces are required. According to BMW Industries, demand for the product is growing across infrastructure, construction, consumer goods, automobiles, renewable energy and defence. The company has not disclosed the production capacity of the newly commissioned line in the supplied announcement.
The Bokaro project is planned as a 5-lakh-tonne greenfield downstream steel complex. Bansal said additional coated-capacity lines would come online in the near future under the ongoing project. The expansion therefore extends beyond the current commissioning and is intended to create a wider downstream manufacturing base at the plant.
The development also adds a utilities dimension to the company’s expansion. During January-March 2026, BMW Industries entered into a partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd to supply piped natural gas to the Bokaro plant. The supplied announcement does not provide details of the volume, contract value or operational start date for the gas supply.
For infrastructure and construction supply chains, the new line represents an additional domestic source of a finished steel product rather than a conventional commodity-grade output. Its immediate market impact will depend on the company’s ramp-up, the commissioning of further lines and demand from the sectors identified by the company. BMW Industries said it would assess international market opportunities after catering to domestic requirements.
