Bibhas Sardar Attack Escalates Political Violence Concerns in Jaynagar

Trinamool Congress MLA Bibhas Sardar was allegedly assaulted and his vehicle vandalised at two locations in Jaynagar on Saturday night while he was returning from a public outreach programme, according to police sources and the legislator’s complaint. The incident has brought renewed attention to the safety of elected representatives and residents during politically sensitive public visits in South 24 Parganas.

Sardar, who represents the Baruipur Purba Assembly constituency, had visited Tilpi village under the Dhosa-Chandaneswar gram panchayat. Police sources said his vehicle was allegedly targeted first at Mansatala and later at Goalberia Haat, both within the jurisdiction of Jaynagar police station. Personnel from the Dhosa Haat police camp reached the area, rescued the MLA and escorted him away.

The legislator was taken to Baruipur subdivisional hospital on Saturday night, where he underwent a CT scan. Sardar alleged that a group of BJP workers threw bricks and eggs at his vehicle and hurled a bomb that did not explode. He also claimed that he was physically assaulted during the second incident and that his security personnel were involved in a scuffle with the attackers.

“While returning from Dhosa-Chandaneswar, around eight to ten people stopped my car at Mansatala,” Sardar told the media. He alleged that the group asked his name, threatened to kill him and said they would send him to the crematorium. He further claimed that one person threw a brick at the front windscreen, after which he managed to leave the spot.

Describing the alleged second attack at Goalberia Haat, Sardar said BJP workers hit him on the head with a brick and assaulted him with kicks, slaps and punches. He also alleged that the attackers used obscene abuses. The MLA filed a police complaint naming Sandeep Nair, president of the BJP’s local No. 3 mandal, along with other BJP leaders and workers.

Nair rejected Sardar’s allegations and offered a different account of the events. He said the MLA had visited the Tilpi area with TMC leaders and local strongmen while an Awas Yojana survey was under way. According to Nair, BJP workers approached Sardar at Dhosa Haat seeking an explanation after he allegedly made provocative remarks, but the MLA sped away and several people were injured.

Nair claimed that the subsequent confrontation at Mansatala and Goalberia Haat reflected public anger rather than a planned attack on the MLA. He said those injured were taken to Padmerhat block rural hospital in Jaynagar-I on Saturday night. The competing claims had not been independently resolved in the supplied report.

The incident follows a similar reported episode in September involving TMC Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh, who was allegedly attacked twice within 24 hours—first while travelling to Sreerampore and later in Kolkata’s Phoolbagan area. In Jaynagar, the immediate next steps are expected to centre on the police complaint, the allegations of assault and the claims of injuries made by both sides.
