Bhopals Aishbagh Overbridge to Be Redesigned After Safety Concerns

The recently constructed Aishbagh Railway Overbridge (ROB) in Bhopal has attracted significant attention due to its unconventional design featuring a sharp 90-degree turn. This design has raised safety concerns among experts and residents alike, prompting authorities to initiate a redesign to address these issues. The overbridge, built at a cost of ₹18 crore, spans 648 metres in length and 8.5 metres in width.

It connects the densely populated areas of Mahamai Ka Bagh, Pushpa Nagar, and the station area to New Bhopal, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and streamline rail-crossing delays. However, the bridge’s abrupt 90-degree turn has become a focal point of criticism. Experts have highlighted that such a sharp turn without adequate warning or curvature poses significant risks to motorists, especially under poor visibility or high-speed conditions. Retired Chief Engineer, PWD, V.K. Amar, emphasized the necessity of incorporating a gradual curve 100 metres before the turn to alert drivers and enhance safety.

The design flaw has not only sparked safety concerns but has also become a subject of widespread ridicule on social media platforms. Memes and satirical posts comparing the turn to racing tracks and video game challenges have gone viral, further amplifying public dissatisfaction. In response to the mounting criticism, the Public Works Department (PWD) has acknowledged the design issues and is collaborating with Indian Railways to develop a revised plan. The proposed redesign includes expanding the bridge’s width by three feet and removing the central divider to facilitate a more functional alignment. Additionally, the existing footpath will be dismantled to improve the turning radius and overall safety.

PWD Minister Rakesh Singh has ordered a formal investigation by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to assess the structural and design aspects of the overbridge. The NHAI’s report has recommended that vehicles should not exceed speeds of 35 to 40 km per hour while crossing the structure to mitigate accident risks. Authorities have clarified that the bridge’s structural integrity is not compromised; however, the alignment and geometry require modification to ensure safer vehicular movement. The redesign aims to address these concerns without demolishing the entire structure, thereby balancing safety improvements with cost-effectiveness.

The Aishbagh overbridge controversy underscores the challenges of urban infrastructure planning, particularly in densely populated areas with limited space. The need to balance functional design with safety considerations is paramount, and the current situation serves as a case study for future projects. As the redesign process unfolds, it is imperative for civic agencies to prioritize user safety and engineering soundness over rapid execution. Public scrutiny has played a crucial role in bringing attention to the design flaws, highlighting the importance of community involvement in infrastructure development. In conclusion, while the Aishbagh overbridge was intended to ease traffic flow and improve connectivity, its design flaws have necessitated a comprehensive redesign. The ongoing efforts to rectify these issues reflect a commitment to ensuring safer and more efficient urban infrastructure for the residents of Bhopal.
