The Karnataka government has put on hold the reservation list for zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat constituencies in Bengaluru Urban district, delaying the publication of reservation details for individual seats.
The decision affects 28 zilla panchayat constituencies and 76 taluk panchayat constituencies across Bengaluru North, Bengaluru East, Yelahanka, Bengaluru South and Anekal taluks, according to a report by Prajavani. The report does not specify the reason for the government’s decision or indicate when the revised or final list will be issued.
At the district panchayat level, seven seats have been designated for Scheduled Castes, one for Scheduled Tribes, five for Backward Class A, one for Backward Class B and 14 for the general category. These figures cover all 28 zilla panchayat constituencies identified for Bengaluru Urban district.
For the 76 taluk panchayat constituencies, the reservation allocation includes 18 seats for Scheduled Castes, five for Scheduled Tribes, 10 for Backward Class A, three for Backward Class B and 40 for the general category. However, the government has not published the reservation category assigned to each individual constituency.
The distinction between category-wise totals and seat-wise allocation is significant for the local electoral process. While the overall number of seats under each category has been identified, candidates and political organisations do not yet have an official constituency-level list showing which seats fall under which reservation category.
The affected local bodies form part of the elected rural local-government structure within Bengaluru Urban district. Their constituencies cover areas administered through the five taluks named in the report, making the reservation list relevant to representation at both district and taluk levels.
Prajavani reported that the government’s action applies to the reservation list already prepared for the Bengaluru Urban district zilla and taluk panchayat constituencies. The report does not provide details of any objections, administrative review, legal proceedings or other factors behind the stay. It also does not state whether the constituency boundaries or the total number of constituencies will change.
The next confirmed step is the government’s publication of a further reservation decision or constituency-wise list. Until that happens, the seat-level reservation status of the 28 zilla panchayat and 76 taluk panchayat constituencies remains unavailable in the reported process.
