The Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat service has moved closer to reality after the Union Railway Ministry ordered the extension of an existing Vande Bharat Express that currently runs between Mangaluru Central and Madgaon in Goa. The decision addresses a long-standing demand from rail passengers in coastal Karnataka for a faster direct connection to the state capital.
According to a report by Prajavani, the existing service will be extended to Bengaluru rather than being operated as an entirely new train. The order is expected to improve direct rail connectivity between Mangaluru, a major commercial centre on the Karnataka coast, and Bengaluru, the state’s administrative and technology hub.
The extension is significant because coastal passengers have been seeking a direct Vande Bharat connection between the two cities. The current service already links Mangaluru Central with Madgaon, but extending its route to Bengaluru would connect the coastal railway network with the state capital through the same service.
However, the proposed operation has also raised a specific concern among railway passengers in Mangaluru. During a trial run, the Vande Bharat train reportedly did not stop at Mangaluru Central. The existing service originates from Mangaluru Central, and passengers are now pressing for the extended train to retain the station as a scheduled stop.
The question of the Mangaluru stop will be important for determining how much of the announced benefit reaches passengers in the city and surrounding coastal areas. Mangaluru Central is the existing departure point for the service, while its omission during the trial run has created uncertainty among local railway users about the final operating pattern.
The extension also illustrates how changes to existing railway services can respond to regional connectivity demands without requiring the immediate creation of a completely new service. At the same time, the announcement by itself does not establish the final timetable, frequency, travel duration, fare structure or complete list of stops. Those details will determine the practical value of the connection for daily and intercity passengers.
Prajavani’s discussion on the extension focuses on the likely benefits for Mangaluru and coastal Karnataka, as well as the demand for a Mangaluru Central stop. The next operational details from the railway authorities will clarify how the extended service will run and whether the station will remain part of its route.
