Bengaluru Club Raid Turns Violent as IAS Officer Named in FIR

Bengaluru club raid outside a bar on Residency Road with police personnel

Bengaluru police have registered a case against Kuppam Area Development Authority special officer Vikas Marmat and three others following an alleged confrontation with police during a late-night inspection at a bar and restaurant on Residency Road.

The FIR was registered by Cubbon Park police after inspector Arun Salunke complained about an incident at Cavore Bar and Restaurant during a citywide crackdown on pubs, bars and restaurants on the night of October 9-10. The operation was ordered by the Bengaluru city police commissioner to check for underage individuals and suspicious persons, according to the complaint reported by the Times of India.

Salunke said he and other police personnel, including officers identified as BS Ashoka and Balaram Nayak, reached the establishment around midnight to check identity cards and verify the ages of people present. Four individuals allegedly argued with the police team over what the complaint described as trivial issues before verbally abusing the officers.

The complaint further alleges that the dispute escalated into an altercation. The incident was recorded, and videos later circulated on social media platforms, according to the report. The available account does not establish the full sequence of events beyond the allegations recorded in the police complaint.

Marmat, a 2019-batch IAS officer, has been named as the prime accused. Abhay Uday Singh, Nitish and Roshan have been named as co-accused in the case. The FIR invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace, assault or criminal force against a public servant performing official duties, and assault or criminal force intended to dishonour a person.

The case follows a broader police enforcement drive across Bengaluru’s nightlife districts. Such inspections place police teams at the intersection of public safety enforcement, licensing compliance and the operation of late-night commercial establishments. In this instance, the police said their immediate purpose was to verify the identity and age of patrons and identify suspicious persons.

The registration of an FIR records the allegations made in the complaint; it does not establish guilt. The report did not include a response from Marmat or the three other accused, nor did it provide details of arrests, the current status of the investigation or any action by the Kuppam Area Development Authority.

Cubbon Park police are handling the case. Further proceedings will depend on the investigation into the alleged altercation and the evidence, including the recorded footage referred to in the complaint.
