Bengaluru AI Road Survey Finds 14,393 Potholes Across 72 Wards

Bengaluru road survey showing a pothole-lined urban street under assessment

An artificial intelligence-based survey of roads under Bengaluru North City Corporation has identified 14,393 potholes across 2,493.5 kilometres of road network, while finding that 82.1% of the surveyed roads are in good or adequate condition, according to a report by Vijay Karnataka.

The assessment covered roads across 72 wards and was designed to record locations requiring repairs, maintenance, resurfacing or wider road development. It also documented damage caused by utility works and identified stretches that remain unpaved or without asphalt.

The survey found that 1,426.8 kilometres of roads were in good condition. A further 607.1 kilometres had minor surface defects. Together, these two categories accounted for 82.1% of the surveyed network. The remaining 17.9% was reported to have been affected by utility works or to include unpaved roads.

The survey recorded an average of 5.8 potholes per kilometre. Alongside the pothole count, the assessment identified 102 kilometres of roads in the E-3 category, with 544 roads in that category reported to have been damaged by utility works. The report did not specify the individual utility agencies responsible for the damage.

The corporation also identified 821 roads without asphalt or classified as raw roads. These stretches are expected to be considered in future road development plans based on local requirements, with the stated aim of improving public connectivity and road safety.

The division-wise figures show significant variation in road condition and pothole counts. Rajarajeshwarinagar had 117.9 kilometres of roads, 85% of which were assessed as being in good condition, with 1,222 potholes recorded. Pulakeshinagar had 149.5 kilometres of roads, 75% in good condition and 1,357 potholes. By road length, Byatarayanapura was the largest division covered, with 823.5 kilometres, 82% in good condition and 5,964 potholes.

Sarvagnanagar recorded 406.6 kilometres of roads, 86% in good condition and 2,359 potholes. Hebbal had 293.2 kilometres, 83% in good condition and 1,368 potholes, while Dasarahalli had 313.5 kilometres, 81% in good condition and 966 potholes. The source report lists Yelahanka’s road length as 389.5 kilometres and its pothole count as 157, but its good-condition percentage is presented with a formatting error and is therefore not stated here.

The corporation plans to use the survey data to prioritise road maintenance and development works. The stated next step is to use the mapped locations of potholes, surface defects, utility-related damage and unpaved roads to determine where repair, restoration or road development should be taken up first.
