Baruipur Hospital Death Raises Questions Over Undertrial Security

Baruipur hospital exterior linked to an investigation into an undertrial prisoner's death

A prisoner awaiting trial died under unusual circumstances while receiving treatment at Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances of his death and the supervision provided to him inside the hospital.

The deceased was identified as Azharul Laskar, a resident of the Jibantala area near Baruipur. According to a report by Bartaman Patrika, Laskar was arrested on October 10 in connection with a kidnapping case and was sent to Baruipur Correctional Home following a court order.

He was taken to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital the following day after falling ill. The transfer was arranged by the correctional authorities, and he remained under treatment at the hospital until his death on Monday, the report said. The circumstances in which he died inside the hospital have not been established.

Police have begun investigating the case. The initial possibility of suicide has reportedly been considered, but officials have not confirmed the cause of death. The case is expected to remain open until investigators examine the circumstances before the death and obtain the findings of the post-mortem examination.

The incident has placed attention on the security and monitoring arrangements for prisoners receiving treatment in public hospitals. Investigators are examining what level of supervision was provided to Laskar, what happened shortly before his death and whether anyone was present nearby at the time, according to the report.

These questions are significant because a prisoner admitted to a hospital remains subject to custodial oversight while also requiring medical care. The arrangements involve more than treatment alone: authorities must coordinate medical access, physical supervision, movement within the facility and the protection of the patient and others in the hospital. The available report does not establish whether any security protocol was breached or whether responsibility has been assigned to any individual or institution.

Laskar had been arrested only days before his death. The short interval between his arrest, transfer to the correctional home, hospital admission and death is among the circumstances being examined by investigators. At present, there is no confirmed finding that the death resulted from suicide, negligence or any other specific cause.

The body was scheduled to be sent for a post-mortem examination on Tuesday. Investigators are expected to use the report, along with other available evidence from the hospital and the custodial authorities, to determine how the death occurred. The post-mortem findings are expected to provide the next official indication of the cause of death.
