Bardhaman district magistrate Shweta Agarwal has ordered roadside traders to clear encroachments from the Curzon Gate–BC Road stretch after finding wholesale fruit and vegetable businesses operating on the road and designated parking areas. The administration said violations would attract fines.
Agarwal inspected BC Road with administrative and municipal officials and found vendors displaying produce on the carriageway. Parking space marked for vehicles had also been occupied, creating difficulties for pedestrians and disrupting the movement of traffic.
During the inspection, the district magistrate reprimanded traders for using the road for business and questioned how pedestrians and vehicles could move through the area if the available space was taken over. She directed sellers to remove their goods immediately and keep the designated parking areas clear.
The inspection also covered irregular motorcycle and toto parking and poor cleanliness along the road. According to the report, the encroachments had obstructed nearly half of BC Road in parts of the market area. The administration said the enforcement action was intended to address congestion before the upcoming puja period, when movement and commercial activity are expected to increase.
Agarwal instructed municipal workers and other officials to begin public communication from Thursday on rules governing roadside business, parking and waste disposal in the Curzon Gate–BC Road area. The campaign is expected to inform traders and road users about the restrictions before penalties are imposed.
The district magistrate also directed officials to begin fining those who continue to violate the instructions. The action follows an earlier inspection of BC Road by minister Agnimitra Pal and Moumita Biswas Mishra, according to the report. The latest order places responsibility on the district administration and the municipality to maintain access for pedestrians, preserve parking capacity and prevent waste accumulation along the commercial corridor.
