Two men died and another person was injured after a section of an old well collapsed during excavation work at Rasवाडी Number One in Deulgaon Rasाल, Baramati taluka, on Sunday morning, according to a report by Pudhari. The incident occurred at around 11 am while work was under way to deepen and restore the approximately 30-year-old well.
The deceased have been identified as Amol Dhanaji Rasal, 26, and Machhindra Ramchandra Rasal, 50. Both men were residents of Rasवाडी Number One and were related as uncle and nephew. The injured person suffered minor injuries, the report said.
Excavation at the well was being carried out with the help of a poclain machine. While the work was in progress, Amol and Machhindra entered the well with an electric pump to remove water. A large portion of the upper edge of the well suddenly gave way and fell on them.
The two men became seriously trapped under the collapsed section and died at the site. After the accident, they were removed from the well and taken to the government hospital in Baramati, where they were declared dead, according to the report.
The collapse highlights the immediate safety risks involved in entering old wells while excavation, water removal and mechanical digging are taking place simultaneously. Older well structures can have weakened edges, but the report did not provide details of any prior structural inspection, safety assessment or protective arrangements at the site.
The accident took place during work intended to deepen an existing water structure rather than construct a new well. Such work involves interaction between heavy machinery, unstable soil, standing water and people working inside confined spaces. The available report did not specify who had authorised the excavation, whether the work was being carried out under a formal safety plan, or whether the well had been declared safe for entry.
Following the incident, a talathi from the revenue department and police officials visited the site, inspected the location and collected information about the accident. The report did not mention any further administrative action, inquiry or compensation announcement. The police and revenue authorities’ site visit remains the latest official response identified in the supplied account.
