Baramati Well Collapse Kills Two Workers During Desilting Work

Baramati well collapse site during rural well desilting work in Maharashtra

Two workers died after part of a farm well collapsed during desilting work at Deulgaon Rasal in Maharashtra’s Baramati taluka on October 18, according to a report by Lokmat – Pune. The workers were inside the well when soil from its edge gave way and buried them.

The deceased have been identified as Machhindра Ramchandra Rasal, 55, and Amol Dhanaji Rasal, 30. The two were carrying out work to remove silt from the well when the collapse occurred. Both were trapped under the fallen soil and died in the incident.

The bodies were sent to Baramati for post-mortem examinations, the report said. The incident has caused concern in Deulgaon Rasал and surrounding areas, with the deaths placing renewed attention on safety conditions for workers engaged in well excavation and maintenance.

Desilting work has been undertaken in parts of Baramati taluka to increase water storage capacity in wells. The work is taking place against a backdrop of reported water scarcity in several villages, affecting both drinking water availability and farming requirements. The effort is intended to improve the capacity of existing water sources and retain more water for local use.

However, workers operating inside wells face the risk of collapsing soil, unstable edges and falling debris. The condition of the well walls and the stability of surrounding soil need to be assessed before workers enter, while appropriate safety arrangements are required during the work. The Deulgaon Rasal incident has brought those risks into focus.

The deaths also underline the difficult conditions surrounding local water-management work. Desilting can help improve the functioning of existing wells, but the work involves confined spaces and unstable ground, making site assessment and worker protection important parts of implementation. The available report did not provide details of any safety inspection, protective equipment or other arrangements at the site before the collapse.

The incident has left the families of both workers grieving and has raised questions about how safety is managed during well-cleaning and desilting operations. Further details on any official inquiry or administrative action were not provided in the report.
