Bannerghatta Road Junctions Get DPR Push Over Safety Risks

Bannerghatta Road junctions and pedestrian footpath conditions in south Bengaluru

The Greater Bengaluru Authority has ordered a Detailed Project Report for junctions along Bannerghatta Main Road between Gottigere and Tavarekere in south Bengaluru, after an inspection identified missing footpaths, unsafe crossings, open drains and utility obstructions affecting pedestrian movement.

GBA Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao issued the direction on October 13, 2026, during an inspection of the footpath along the 3.2-km stretch between Kalena Agrahara Metro Station and IIMB Metro Station. The proposed DPR will focus on improving traffic movement and pedestrian safety along the corridor.

During the inspection, Mr. Rao identified several points where pedestrians are forced to negotiate unsafe or obstructed pathways. These included a location near a bus stop about 50 metres from Kalena Agrahara Metro Station, where officials were asked to examine the feasibility of providing a safe crossing.

The crossing will have to be assessed in relation to the site conditions and the road’s 10.5-metre carriageway width, according to the directions issued during the inspection. The report is expected to examine the development of junctions along the wider Bannerghatta Main Road stretch between Gottigere and Tavarekere.

The inspection also brought multiple agency responsibilities into focus. Officials were directed to coordinate with optical fibre cable operators to relocate chambers and cables that obstruct footpaths. Traffic police officials were asked to identify alternative locations for police cabins currently installed on pedestrian pathways.

Bengaluru’s electricity distribution utility, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company, was also included in the proposed coordination. Mr. Rao directed officials to explore relocating Bescom Ring Main Unit equipment that is obstructing pedestrian movement to nearby properties.

The directions indicate that the proposed junction improvements will require work beyond road engineering alone. Footpath continuity, crossing safety, drainage conditions, telecom infrastructure, police facilities and power equipment will all need to be addressed across the inspected corridor.

The next step is the preparation of the Detailed Project Report. The GBA has not provided a project cost, construction timeline or implementation schedule in the directions reported after the inspection. The feasibility of the pedestrian crossing and the relocation of the identified utility and public-agency obstructions will be examined as part of the officials’ follow-up work.
