A 21-year-old woman was killed after being run over by a truck while cycling near Netaji Market on Yashore Road in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas, on Panchami evening, according to a report by Sangbad Pratidin and information attributed to police and local sources. The victim, identified as Priyanka Ray, died at the spot.
Ray, a resident of Debgarh in Bangaon, had left home on her bicycle to buy clothes and other items from the market. She had reportedly told her three-year-old son that she would return and take him to see the Durga Puja displays. The child was waiting at home when news of the accident reached the family later in the night.
According to the report, a truck was travelling from the Petrapole side when Ray lost control of her bicycle and fell onto the road. The truck’s wheel then ran over her. Local residents took the injured woman to Bangaon Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors on duty declared her dead.
The incident took place near Netaji Market, a busy commercial area on Yashore Road, during the evening of the festival period. The report said the crash led to grief in the surrounding locality, while Ray’s family broke down after receiving the news.
The case was reported to the police after the woman was taken to hospital. Her body was sent for a post-mortem examination, according to the report. The available account does not provide details of any arrest, formal police case or action against the truck driver.
The death brings attention to the risks faced by cyclists and other vulnerable road users on busy roads in smaller urban centres, particularly around markets and during periods of increased pedestrian and vehicle movement. In this case, the reported collision occurred while Ray was travelling to a local market by bicycle.
Further details about the circumstances of the crash, including the vehicle’s registration, the truck driver’s status and the findings of the post-mortem examination, were not available in the supplied report. The next official developments are expected to follow the police investigation and post-mortem process.
