Bandra Station Platform 8 to Boost Mumbai Local Capacity

Bandra station platform 8 will be built on the eastern side of the station as part of work to accelerate the sixth railway line between Mumbai Central and Borivali, a project expected to expand suburban train capacity on Mumbai’s Western Railway corridor. The intervention will also require changes to the Bandra-Khar flyover and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s foot overbridge on the station’s northern side.

According to a report by Navbharat Times – Mumbai, the new platform will come up on land where Garib Nagar previously stood. An officer cited in the report said the additional platform would benefit passengers and help create operational scope for more local train services. Bandra currently has seven platforms, with platforms 1 to 4 serving Main Line suburban trains and platforms 5 to 7 serving Harbour Line services. Once completed, platform 8 will take the station’s total to eight platforms.

The platform work is linked to the broader construction of the sixth line between Mumbai Central and Borivali. The section between Dadar and Khar Road is considered important to the project because it includes complex interfaces with existing railway operations, the Bandra-Khar flyover and station access infrastructure.

Work connected with the existing platform 7 and the proposed platform 8 is also moving towards the tendering stage. The report says a tender for a service building associated with remaining structures is being prepared. However, construction cannot fully proceed until around 100 project-affected people are relocated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

The relocation issue remains a key immediate dependency. The report says the Bombay High Court issued directions on 29 April 2026 regarding the affected residents. Until rehabilitation is completed, other works connected with the platform project are expected to remain affected. The supplied report does not provide details of the rehabilitation site, compensation arrangements or a revised relocation deadline.

The Bandra-Khar flyover will also be reconstructed using a revised layout and structural design. The design is scheduled to be completed by 31 October 2026. To limit disruption to Harbour Line services, Western Railway plans to construct the flyover’s northern ramp using precast box segments. A separate design is being prepared for a section with a curve associated with a non-standard overhead wiring arrangement, according to the report.

The project is being delivered in stages across the Mumbai Central-Dadar and Dadar-Khar Road sections. The Mumbai Central-Dadar section is scheduled for completion by March 2029, while the Dadar-Khar Road section has a December 2029 target. These timelines place the Bandra platform, flyover and access works within a multi-year programme rather than a standalone station upgrade.

Western Railway has previously planned four additional platforms at Virar, Borivali and Andheri. The proposed Bandra platform forms part of that wider effort to add railway infrastructure on a corridor where Main Line and Harbour Line operations converge at a heavily used interchange. The next stated milestones are completion of the revised flyover design by October 2026, preparation of the service-building tender and relocation of the remaining project-affected residents.
